029. From Commerce to Code: My COVID Journey

This is the real story I wanted to share: I did not start as a CS student, I started as a Commerce student by necessity. The passion for science and engineering was always in my heart.

In 2019, money constraints made me choose Commerce over Computer Science. In 2020, during the first wave of COVID, I decided to turn that passion into a daily practice.

I learned everything through free resources, especially YouTube, and built projects in small steps. This post is written in parts so it is easy to share and continue later.

Part 1: the choice and the inner fire (2019)

  • Commerce path chosen under financial pressure, even when my soul leaned toward engineering.
  • I studied the syllabus and realized I still loved algorithms, data structures, and logic.
  • At night, I watched coding tutorials while my peers prepared for commerce exams.

Part 2: COVID lockdown as a turning point (2020)

  • Lockdown gave me time and focus. I committed to learning web technologies one hour every day.
  • YouTube channels and hands-on practice replaced formal labs for me.
  • I built small pages, explored HTML/CSS/JS, and read about modern tools like React and Node.

Part 3: first client = friend Sreyo

  • My first real website project was for my friend Sreyo. It was simple but real.
  • Delivering working value taught me professionalism, deadlines, and communication.
  • This early client gave me confidence to accept more requests.

Part 4: first international client

  • After Sreyo’s project, a referral led to an international client.
  • I learned to work across time zones, share progress over video/WhatsApp, and improve quality.
  • The project expanded my skills in responsive design, minimal UX, and project management.

Part 5: the next chapters

  • Now I build a portfolio and write this blog to log a journey from Commerce to Coding.
  • Next goals: deeper CS fundamentals, better architecture skills, and stable freelance/in-house work.
  • If you want resume updates, I’m capturing them in the same repository (locally downloaded copy available for your reference).

TL;DR: I turned a forced Commerce path into a coding career by learning constantly, serving a friend first client, and scaling to international freelance work during COVID.
